coAction to be profiled in the Gartner 2012 Cool Vendors in Platform as a Service report. Read an excerpt from the writeup below:

coAction

Analysis by Michele Cantara

Why Cool:
Founded in 2010, coAction offers an integration platform as a service (iPaaS) directly to customers and it also uses the iPaaS as foundation for its own cloudstream offerings, called coApps. coApps for payment processing, collection management, vendor invoice processing, and purchase order processing are available from coAction and also from the Google Apps marketplace.

coAction is cool for several reasons:
  • coAction makes it affordable for midmarket companies to build and use coApps and to integrate them with existing ERP applications, as well as with their partner/suppliers ecosystems.
  • It does not require IT staff to have special skills in business process modeling. Integrated solutions can be created by IT specialists familiar with XML and SOA, and it is designed so that once a coApp has been built, changes to rules, flows, and KPIs can be done by business users.
  • In addition to using its iPaaS as a foundation for cloustreams, shared pool of process domain specialists in coAction’s offshore center, deliver bPaaS offerings that rely on the iPaaS. In this way, coAction makes it possible to take advantage of a cloud-enabled outsourcing approach to service delivery.
  • coAction uses a flexible pricing model that accommodates an organization’s own users, and its partners and suppliers. Its pricing algorithm looks at the following parameters: named full time users, number of modules or coApps used, and number of transactions used. For each named full time user, an additional 2 occasional user licenses are provided, as well as an additional 5 portal users.
The coAction platform is a configuration-driven architecture, based on declarative XML. It is delivered using a shared everything multi-tenancy model, although customers can request a dedicated database environment.

The coAction design environment supports the construction of re-usable business services that are housed in a services repository. The platform functions as a business process platform (BPP) which uses proprietary rules engine and workflow technologies. It also provides data transformation capabilities. coAction is currently being used by 50 companies. coAction principally targets midmarket companies, but it also includes large enterprises such as, Independence Blue Cross, TelePacific Communications, and Citrix, in its client roster. Its clients also include BPO providers who are looking to provider more agile offerings for order-to-cash processes.

Who Should Care:
  • Finance, supply chain, B2B, integration and IT managers in midmarket companies who are looking to extend the capabilities of their ERP systems with cloud services.
  • BPO, CSB, bPaaS, and SaaS providers who are looking for both a platform and applications as a foundation for their services businesses should consider partnering with coAction or embedding the iPaaS into their own SaaS and bPaaS offerings.
